Princess Ileana–Mother Alexandra Press Photo 1991

January 23, 1991Princess Ileana of Romania known as Mother Alexandra after becoming a nun, died Monday in Youngstown, Ohio. She founded the Monastery of the Holy Transfiguration, a community of nuns of the Orthodox Church in America. The monastery is at Ellwood City in western Pennsylvania. She lived there for 22 years. She was an aunt of former King Michael of Romania and a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II of Britain. She traveled to Romania in September 1990, her first visit since the communist government forced her to leave her country in 1948, to see the graves of her parents, King Ferdinand and Queen Marie.
